3 ways to convert existing patients into aligner starts

Most dentists fail to convert existing patients into aligner starts for one simple reason: they do not offer it.

They fear the patient will ask, “Why did you not tell me this before?”

But the truth is you just did not know how before.

You are allowed to grow and improve.

Here are 3 simple tactics to convert existing patients into aligner starts:

  1. Cracked teeth. If a patient is repeatedly fracturing molars, evaluate their bite. Even distribution of forces through alignment is the long-term fix.
  2. Anterior chipping or incisal edge composites. These cases almost always need bite correction to make the restoration last. Offer aligners as part of the plan.
  3. Stop assuming. Patients see ads constantly. Many are interested but do not think they qualify until you tell them. If they are a candidate, offer it without fear of judgment.

The bottom line: Existing patients already trust you. The fastest path to more starts is simply diagnosing and offering.

That is all for today.

I recently met with the CEO of a DSO with over 100 locations. And I walked away with a few realizations that most dentists don’t think about. Not every DSO is bad. But every DSO is different. Dentists love to generalize. “DSOs are corporate.” “DSOs don’t care about doctors.” “DSOs only care about numbers.” Some do. Some don’t. The real issue isn’t whether DSOs are good or bad. It’s whether you’ve done the work to understand how a specific one operates. If you’re considering working for a DSO...

I just got back from the Chicago Midwinter Meeting. It’s one of the biggest dental conferences in the world. And three things became very clear to me. There are more people trying to help dentists than dentists trying to receive help. That’s not a bad thing. It means there are solutions. It means innovation exists. It means people care. But it also means something else. When the market gets crowded, quality gets diluted. A lot of people from outside dentistry see opportunity here. Dentists...

Hey Doc, In today’s competitive landscape, the question isn’t whether you should offer clear aligners—it’s when you should hit the gas on your marketing spend to capture the market. Most GPs and DSOs make the same expensive mistake: they try to buy growth before they’ve built a foundation.Marketing is an amplifier, not a fix.If your internal case acceptance systems are underperforming, spending on ads only amplifies those inefficiencies. You end up spending more on patient acquisition than you...
