Hey Friends, I hope you have been having a good weekend. For those of you in the USA - Happy Memorial Day weekend! I am currently in Florida spending time with family. My wife's side of the family put together a family reunion and we have been getting some much needed time in the sun :) On the topic of spending time outside of dentistry - I don't think this is emphasized enough in our profession. We have all worked extremely hard to get to this point in our lives and not many of us actually stop and think about how far we have come. Most of us are perfectionists and always striving for MORE. I challenge you to stop and reflect either today or tomorrow and write out some of your recent accomplishments. This should help you pause and give credit to the things you do - no matter how big or small it may be. I know I struggle sometimes feeling like I am "not doing enough" or thinking "I can always do better." But this mindset will only take you so far and can leave you feeling inadequate. Celebrate your wins - because if you don't - who will? Straight TalkThis week's actionable tip is about scanning. If you don't have a scanner and are considering getting into aligners - this is a MUST! You will not only be able to scale aligners with a scanner - you will be providing a higher level of care and experience to your patients. It is 2023... stop relying on the 50 shades of gray radiographs to paint the picture of what is going on in your patients' mouths. Don't be a dental dinosaur. It's time to upgrade. The tip is that if you HAVE a scanner - USE the scanner. The goal should be to scan every new patient and every patient at their recall exams (when radiographs are not being taken). Communicate this LONG TERM goal with your team - then set a short term goal. Something like 2 scans per day for this month. Then once they get comfortable doing that and get their speed improved - increase the number each month - then before you know it - you will have hit your goal! Video of the WeekA lot of dentists tell you how to keep your teeth. I made a fun video explaining 28 ways you can LOSE your teeth. Watch it here now If you found this video enjoyable - feel free to subscribe to my youtube channel! I share new videos every week about Dentistry and Clear Aligners! Aligners in the NewsThis article does a good job of outlining all the factors that play into aligners vs braces vs in office vs at home. I think it is important for us providers to at least be AWARE of the conversations happening in the world about OUR industry. Not many dentists are out there publishing articles (who has time for this...) so what happens is other people weigh in on OUR profession. That being said - if you feel like you shy away from these conversations (I know I do sometimes) it is most likely because you don't have all the facts and don't want to share your opinion on it at that time. This is ok. But I urge you to start consuming a little more information outside of clinical procedures. People look to us as "experts" and most of us stopped learning when we graduated dental school. Don't be afraid to continue to learn as we will all be better clinicians and people when we do so. Your Friend, Dr. Avi P.S. Want to learn more from me? Most dentists fail to convert existing patients into aligner starts for one simple reason: they do not offer it. They fear the patient will ask, “Why did you not tell me this before?” But the truth is you just did not know how before. You are allowed to grow and improve. Here are 3 simple tactics to convert existing patients into aligner starts: Cracked teeth. If a patient is repeatedly fracturing molars, evaluate their bite. Even distribution of forces through alignment is the long-term fix....
I used to think growth meant taking on harder cases. That is what I saw other dentists doing with implants. They would start with a single tooth, then graduate to multiple teeth, and eventually full arch cases. Complexity stacked, and so did their confidence. So I assumed aligners worked the same way. But it did not take long to realize they don’t. Here is what I noticed. On Instagram, the dentists posting complex aligner cases were not celebrating at the finish line. They were relieved. More...
I once had a patient who kept cracking his molars one by one. At the start I told him it was happening because of his occlusion and that we needed to even out his bite with aligners to distribute the forces. He did not listen. He just kept breaking teeth. Then on the final crown seat appointment he looked at me and said, “I think I want to do aligners.” That experience stuck with me. Most dentists fail to convert existing patients because they simply do not offer it. They feel like if they...
