How I helped a dentist overcome team struggles

Hey Friends,

Expanding services in your dental practice, such as offering aligners, comes with its set of challenges.

One of the most significant hurdles can be internal resistance from your own team.

Today, I want to share a story about how I helped a fellow dentist overcome this exact obstacle.

The Challenge of Change

Dr. Smith (name changed for privacy) was excited to introduce aligner services in his practice.

He understood the benefits—both for his patients and his business.

However, his team was less enthusiastic.

They were hesitant about the new workflows, particularly the implementation of regular scans, fearing it would complicate their already busy schedules.

Step-by-Step: Overcoming Resistance

I stepped in to help Dr. Smith address these concerns with his team. Here’s how we tackled it:

1. Education First: We started by hosting a training session where I explained the benefits of aligners and the importance of scans not just for patient outcomes but also for the practice’s growth. Understanding the ‘why’ behind the change is crucial.

2. Hands-On Demonstrations: Sometimes, resistance comes from a fear of the unknown. We organized hands-on demonstrations to show the team just how straightforward and efficient scanning can be with the right techniques and tools.

3. Addressing Concerns: I encouraged an open forum during the training where team members could voice their concerns. We tackled each point, ensuring that everyone felt heard and their worries were addressed.

4. Gradual Implementation: Instead of overhauling everything at once, we introduced scanning gradually. This allowed the team to get comfortable with the process without feeling overwhelmed.

5. Celebrating Small Wins: Each time a team member completed a scan or a patient accepted aligner treatment, we celebrated. This recognition helped build momentum and confidence.

The Outcome

Within a few months, Dr. Smith’s team had fully integrated scanning into their routine.

The initial resistance turned into enthusiasm as they saw the positive impact on their patients and practice.

Dr. Smith reported a significant uptick in patient satisfaction and practice revenue.

Your Takeaway

If you’re facing resistance to new procedures in your practice, remember that change management is as much about psychology as it is about logistics.

Equip your team with knowledge, ease them into new processes, and ensure they feel supported throughout the transition.

Implementing new services like aligners can be transformative for your practice, but it’s a journey that requires everyone’s buy-in.

Hey Friends, I used to think aligner reps were just salespeople until my brother went through Align’s training. He learned not only about the product but also about dental anatomy and basic biomechanics. I was impressed honestly lol The training they get is far more comprehensive than you might expect. Now, not all reps are created equal—some are hired without going through the full program. But if you’ve got a territory rep who’s been through the proper training, they’re a valuable resource...

Hey Friends, When it comes to presenting treatment plans, I’ve seen too many dentists make the mistake of only listing a single line—“Clear Aligners: $5500.” But here’s the thing: patients need to understand why they’re investing that amount and what they’re getting in return. Take a few minutes to list everything you’re providing for that $5500: unlimited appointments, retainers, digital scans, before-and-after photos, the aligners themselves, and even materials. Stack the value and show...

Hey Friends, I’ve noticed that some team members ask for incentives or bonuses for aligner cases, but here’s the thing—aligners are a regular part of your treatment offerings, just like fillings or crowns. Do you offer bonuses for every crown or implant case? Probably not. Before jumping to offer incentives, think twice. Offering bonuses for something that’s regularly offered can set the wrong precedent. It can create short-term wins but lead to long-term expectations that could backfire. I’m...
