Why Cutting Corners on Scanner Sleeves Can Cost You Big

Hey Friends,

I once worked at a practice that tried to cut costs by re-using scanner sleeves for their iTero, even though they’re meant for one-time use.

Most of the time, it seemed fine.

But there were days when scans came out distorted or it took longer for the camera to capture the teeth—eating into chair time and sometimes even requiring a re-do if we had to bring the patient back.

I get it—those costs add up.

My recommendation?

If you can find alternatives that don’t cut into efficiency, go for it.

But sometimes, you’re better off just playing the game and following instructions.

The worst-case scenario is damaging the camera, which could end up costing you tens of thousands of dollars to fix down the line.

Think long-term—it’s not worth the risk.

Let me know what you think!

Video of the Week

Did you know that the average dental practice owner spends $2,500 a month on a marketing agency—and most of them are just throwing their money away?

In this video, I’m breaking down why traditional marketing approaches are failing so many dentists and what you can do instead to see real results.

I’ll show you how to take control of your marketing, cut unnecessary costs, and focus on strategies that actually grow your practice. If you’re tired of pouring money into marketing with little to no return, this video is a must-watch.

Straight Talk

Let’s get into the real reason why crowding happens, especially when you’re dealing with adult ortho cases. Here’s the thing: crowding is ultimately a spacing issue.

It’s not about having "too many teeth" but rather about having arches that are too narrow, which ends up pushing teeth inward and causing that front overlap we’re all too familiar with.

Now, when it comes to treating adult patients, every case is unique. That’s what makes it so interesting—and challenging. No two mouths are the same, and there’s always going to be something a little less than ideal in each situation.

That’s why you’re doing ortho in the first place—to fix what’s not working.

The key is to approach each case by carefully assessing the individual’s anatomy and using the right strategies.

You’ve got to consider more than just the teeth. Take the ramus, for example—think of it like a rainbow.

On top of that sits the basal bone, and on top of that is the alveolar bone, which comes in all sorts of shapes: rainbow, V-shape, omega shape—you name it.

This structure affects how you’ll approach the case and what’s going to work best for each patient.

The bottom line? There’s no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to adult orthodontics.

You’ve got to assess the bone structure, the arch, and the spacing issues, and then apply the right combination of techniques to get the job done.

Ready to tackle crowding in your adult patients? Start with understanding the unique structure in each case, and you’ll be on your way to delivering the results they need.

When I first started teaching aligners, a lot of people asked me the same question... “Which brand do you use?” They wanted me to say one name. Invisalign. SureSmile. ClearCorrect. OrthoSnap. CandidPro. But the truth is, I do not care about the brand. What matters is the doctor. What matters is the patient. And what matters most is that the case gets started. Most dentists get stuck obsessing over which aligner company is better. They spend months debating marketing claims, lab fees, and...

Most dentists get stuck in idea overload. They write down every thought, attend CE courses, and collect pages of notes. But nothing actually changes in the practice. I know because I used to do the same thing. I would fill notebooks with “good ideas” and then let them sit. It felt exciting at first, but eventually it became overwhelming. What I learned is simple: ideas only matter if you execute on them. Here are 3 rules that helped me shift from hoarding ideas to creating results: 1. One...

I used to watch minor cracks and crowding “just to be safe.” I thought waiting meant I was being conservative. One patient came back six months later with a cracked molar. She asked me, “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” That question stung. I realized “waiting” wasn’t protecting my patients — it was protecting my own fears. If you’re stuck, try this instead: Diagnose what you see clearly and early Explain risks of delaying treatment in simple language Give patients all the info so they can...
